CURRENT VACANCIES

Communications Officer

Deadline for applications: 8 December 2024.

At the Society of Highland and Island Historical Research we’re looking for a Communications Officer to join our team. We’re a small charity, and we do only three things,  but we like to do them well. We publish a well-respected thrice-yearly journal called West Highland Notes and Queries (WHN&Q). We run popular monthly online lectures from October to March. And we mount occasional conferences (the last one, ‘The Sixteenth Century in the Highlands’, was at Inverness in July this year). We’re steadily attracting new members worldwide, and we’re particularly keen to engage with postgraduate students who have an interest in the history of the Highlands and Islands.

The person appointed will have particular expertise in social media. They will take charge of our Facebook page, advertising our talks, flagging up specific articles and ‘conversations’ in WHN&Q, and promoting the proceedings of this year’s conference (scheduled for publication next year). They will be proactive, e.g. asking the editor of WHN&Q what looks like being of greatest interest in the next number, pursuing the writer of the article in question, and obtaining appropriate images, just as a good journalist would do. They will also monitor the Facebook page for comments and questions, and provide answers (in collaboration with other team members, where required).

A Communications Officer who happens to be a student would find this a useful activity for enhancing their CV and also for engaging with and building contacts in the wider historical community.

The post is not very demanding in terms of hours. It carries a starting honorarium of £200 p.a. For a successful Communications Officer, this can be expected to grow as the society grows. The post also includes free membership of the society.

Apply for the post by e-mailing info@highlandhistoricalresearch.com, attaching your CV. Applicants who are students should provide a brief letter of support from their supervisor.

Deadline for applications: 8 December 2024.

Online Lectures Assistant

Deadline for applications: 8 December 2024.

At the Society of Highland and Island Historical Research we’re looking for an Online Lectures Assistant to join our team. We’re a small charity, but we have a growing worldwide membership, and we like to do things well. We’re particularly keen to engage with postgraduate students who have an interest in the history of the Highlands and Islands.

The person appointed for this role will be technically proficient, and comfortable with using (or learning how to use) email marketing platform MailerLite. They will be careful and attentive by nature, ensuring that every detail is correct before hitting ‘send’! The society has a membership of over 100 and a mailing list of over 500. These numbers are steadily growing.

There are currently six lectures per year, in October, November, December, January, February and March (see https://www.highlandhistoricalresearch.com/online-lectures for details). The Online Lectures Assistant will be tasked with sending three email campaigns for each lecture, during the two weeks prior to the event. Tasks will include:

  • liaising with the Online Lectures Organiser to obtain up-to-date lists of subscribers and registrations
  • adding new subscribers to the list, and tagging each subscriber who has registered for the lecture
  • updating email campaign templates with the text and imagery provided
  • changing the filter to send to a particular group of subscribers

It is expected that each lecture will require a total of around 3 hours of work, spread across a period of two weeks before the lecture itself. The role carries a starting honorarium of £200 p.a. The post also includes free membership of the society.

Apply for the post by e-mailing info@highlandhistoricalresearch.com, attaching your CV. Applicants who are students should provide a brief letter of support from their supervisor.

Deadline for applications: 8 December 2024.
