West Highland Notes & Queries
The main publication of the Society is the long running West Highland Notes & Queries series.
Over the years some of the most distinguished and knowledgable historians have contributed to this publication, sometimes to try out a theory, but always to enhance our knowledge of the Highlands and Islands. Others, including both professional historians and interested amateurs, have contributed to see if anyone can help out with their question. All have added a depth to this extraordinary archive which goes back fifty years.
The title West Highland Notes & Queries is inherited from the Society’s roots in the Isle of Coll. In fact, contributions relating to all parts of Gaelic Scotland, from St Kilda to Aberdeenshire and Caithness to Galloway, are welcome. We intend to change the title to Highland Notes & Queries when we reach the end of Series 5.
Readers are encouraged to add to this archive of knowledge. If you are doing research, and you want to find out if anyone knows anything more about your subject, write a query. If you think you know the answer to a query, write a reply. And if you have done some original research and would like others to read it, write a note or a longer article. All contributions – from both historians and interested amateurs – are very welcome, and the editor will consider them for inclusion in an issue of West Highland Notes & Queries as soon as there is space to do so. All we ask is that your contribution is as short and concise as possible and you follow the style of the most recent issue.
