Synopsis

Based on autobiographical notes from the period 1770 to1850 left by two ancestors, this sgeul gives a series of vignettes of lives in transition from pre-clearance subsistence Sutherland to prosperous business in Glasgow. Including: influence of the Kirk Session, service in a Fencible Regiment, a croft’s livestock, the textile industry, the evolution of transport between Glasgow and Sutherland. All backed up with considerable numeric and financial detail.

About the speaker

Sandy was raised in Edinburgh. A Maths graduate he lived for any years in mainland Europe, working in IT. Now retired he commutes between Bristol and Nether Lorn. His Gaelic journey began on a croft in Lochaber in 1950, was stimulated by the Gaelic landscape as it refers to the Munros (mountains) and formalised by several courses from SMO. For more than five years working on the Dewar Manuscripts project, as transcriber, moderator and now on the inventory of places.
