30. The Death of David Strathbogie, earl of Atholl, in 1335: What was going on?
by Dr Iain A. MacInnes
Synopsis
David Strathbogie, earl of Atholl (d.1335) was a pivotal figure in the Second Scottish War of Independence (1332-1357). His place as a successor to the Comyns, as a potential heir to the throne, and as the principal general and political figure in the Scottish north for the Balliol cause in the renewed Scottish civil war, ensured a prominence that has nonetheless been somewhat lost to history. Following on from a previous talk given to the society, this lecture will focus on Strathbogie’s death, speculate on what may have happened in its aftermath, and consider how and why Strathbogie’s importance has been diminished in history.

About the speaker
Dr Iain MacInnes is a Senior Lecturer in Scottish History at the University of the Highlands and Islands, and Associate Dean of Humanities and Applied Social Science. His historical focus lies in the medieval Scottish Wars of Independence (1296-1357), particularly in relation to the military history of the conflict. This was the theme for his 2016 monograph, Scotland’s Second War of Independence, 1332-1357, published by Boydell & Brewer. He has since considered other aspects of this conflict, including its impacts on urban communities, women in the war, and “the other side” in the civil war that lay at its foundation.
