23. The King in the North?
‘David Strathbogie, earl of Atholl, and the Comyn Inheritance during the Second Scottish War of Independence (1332– 1336)’
by Iain MacInnes
Synopsis
The Second Scottish War of Independence (1332-1357) saw Scotland return to a state last seen in 1306-1310, when the civil war between Bruce and Balliol/Comyn was arguably more important than the war with England. One of the chief antagonists in this renewed conflict was David Strathbogie, chiefly claimant to the earldom of Atholl, but through his Comyn grandfather also to the lordships of Badenoch and Lochaber, and even to the crown itself. This talk will reconsider Strathbogie’s career in Scotland, his potential ambitions for the Scottish north, and his achievements during a period when anything may have been possible.

About the speaker
Dr Iain MacInnes is a Senior Lecturer in Scottish History at the University of the Highlands and Islands, and Associate Dean of Humanities and Applied Social Science. His historical focus lies in the medieval Scottish Wars of Independence (1296-1357), particularly in relation to the military history of the conflict. This was the theme for his 2016 monograph, Scotland’s Second War of Independence, 1332-1357, published by Boydell & Brewer. He has since considered other aspects of this conflict, including its impacts on urban communities, women in the war, and “the other side” in the civil war that lay at its foundation.
